Ignite School Comes Together to Protect Our Ozone Layer

: Ignite School students participate in International Ozone Day activities

From colorful Ozone Protector parades to hands-on investigations, student-led presentations, and environmental volunteering, Ignite School turned awareness into action on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.

On September 16, students across all phases of Ignite School came together to explore the importance of the ozone layer and its vital role in protecting life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Through creative, interactive, and age-appropriate experiences, students were encouraged not only to understand the science behind ozone protection, but also to think about how they can contribute to a healthier planet.

Young Ozone Protectors Lead the Way

Our youngest learners from Pre-K to Grade 2 brought the celebration to life as they transformed into little “Ozone Protectors.” After designing and wearing their own ozone-themed headbands, students took part in an energetic parade through the Elementary and Middle School areas, proudly spreading awareness and sharing the message that protecting our planet starts with understanding it.

Learning, Sharing, and Inspiring

Students in Grades 3–5 explored the ozone layer through engaging classroom activities, with an exciting addition from our senior students. A group of Grade 12 volunteers visited the younger classes to deliver an interactive presentation about the importance of the ozone layer. Students then put their knowledge to the test through a fun pop quiz, with small prizes awarded to the winners.

This student-led approach gave our younger learners an opportunity to learn from their peers while allowing our seniors to develop their communication, leadership, and presentation skills.

Middle School: Science in Action

Across the Middle School, students explored ozone protection through a variety of creative and inquiry-based activities.

Grade 6 students participated in a hands-on activity using UV beads and tested the effect of the sun on them.

Grade 7 students participated in a hands-on inquiry lab using a creative balloon model to investigate how the ozone layer protects Earth from harmful radiation. Through observation, discussion, and scientific analysis, students explored the importance of preserving this vital atmospheric shield.

Grade 8 students embarked on an interactive Ozone Day Mission, working collaboratively to complete a series of science challenges. Through hands-on tasks, model building, and class presentations, students strengthened their understanding of ozone protection while developing teamwork, creativity, and communication skills.

Grade 9 Biology students stepped into the role of science communicators through their “Ozone News and Live Sketch” activity. Working as news teams, students created and performed short reports explaining how the ozone layer protects living organisms from harmful UV radiation, while highlighting practical actions that can help preserve this essential natural shield.

Grade 11 students created a collaborative Ozone Awareness Tree, filling it with individually written leaves carrying messages, precautions, and practical ideas for protecting the ozone layer. The final display became a visual reminder that small actions and informed choices can contribute to a greater environmental impact.

Grade 12: From Scientists to Science Ambassadors

Our Grade 12 students took their learning further through a hands-on investigation using balloons and different protective materials to model the protective role of the ozone layer. By exposing their models to sunlight and comparing the results, students investigated the importance of protective barriers against harmful UV radiation and gained a deeper understanding of how the ozone layer helps safeguard life on our planet.

But their contribution did not stop there.

Our seniors became science ambassadors, sharing their knowledge with younger students through classroom presentations and interactive quizzes. By taking on the role of educators, they demonstrated how scientific knowledge can be used to inspire and empower others.

Taking Environmental Action Beyond the Classroom

The spirit of the celebration continued on Friday, September 18, when 30 Grade 12 students participated in a beach-cleaning volunteering activity with Dubai Municipality.

The initiative connected environmental education with meaningful action, giving students the opportunity to contribute directly to the care of their local environment while earning valuable volunteering hours. It was a fitting continuation of the message behind Ozone Day: understanding environmental challenges is important, but taking action is what helps create meaningful change.

A School-Wide Message: Learn. Inspire. Act.

From our youngest Ozone Protectors proudly marching through the school to our senior students leading presentations and giving back to the community, the celebration brought the entire Ignite community together around a shared environmental message.

At Ignite, we believe that science is not only about understanding the world around us—it is also about empowering students to make a positive difference in it.

The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer gave our students the opportunity to learn about an important global issue, inspire one another, and turn scientific understanding into action.
