How Working from Home Parents Can Support Child Learning at Home

Introduction

Working from home while supporting your child’s learning can be a daunting task. For most parents, it can feel like you are working two full-time roles at the same time. Work meetings and deadlines can often overlap with household duties, online classes and school assignments. Let’s start off first by taking some time to support your child’s learning at home.

We also want to reassure you are not asked to replace your child’s teachers. Schools remain primarily responsible for your child’s education. We conduct distance learning support at home by staying connected, organized, and emotionally supported. What matters most is not perfection, but consistency, communication, and care.

This guide is designed to support parents in creating a home learning routine that is manageable and effective to learning at home, particularly for families connected to Ignite School. It recognises that while the school remains responsible for teaching, planning, and assessment, parents play an important role to support online learning for students at home by helping children stay engaged, organised, and supported.

Common Challenges Parents Face with Home Learning

Distance learning has shown challenges to both students and parents like maintaining a routine and proper schedule at home for distance learning because of parents balancing their work and distance learning support. Additionally, keeping students motivated during online classes with its low interactivity and engagements from teacher and peers. Lastly, gap on subject knowledge that effects parent support to child’s learning like high-level math and science being subject that not every parent knows.

Shared Responsibility

As per KHDA guidance, it remains the school remains primary responsible for teaching and lesson planning, while parents and guardians will help “fill in the gaps” where teachers are unable to individually support students while they are working at home. Our focus is on distance learning support and continuing your child’s education even though we must do so from home.

We envision distance learning as a strong partnership between teachers in school and parents and guardians working from home. Teachers will take the lead introducing new skills to students while we also work to further develop previous skills. Schools are also responsible for assessments, and individualized educational enrichment. Parents will help ensure students complete and submit work in a timely manner, build a home learning routine, and help communicate with teachers when students require distance learning support.

As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child.” By working together effectively, teachers, parents, and guardians can support the academic and emotional growth of each of our students.

Home Routines

One way that schools support our students is through schedules and building a home learning routine. This provides students with a sense of structure and stability and helps remove a sense of feeling lost in all the daily activities that they take part in. At home, parents and guardians can also support students through regular routines.

A successful learning day at home does not need to look like a traditional school day. In fact, simple and flexible routines often work best for families who are balancing work and school. A well-organised environment can help both parents and children stay focused and reduce stress during the day.

As we said before, we understand that your work schedule is busy so check-ins with your children do not need to be lengthy or in-depth necessarily. A quick question like “What are you working on now?” helps children stay on track without needing constant supervision. A daily checklist to help you keep up with online learning to support your child has been provided for you to use.

Daily Checklist for Supporting Your Child:

Morning:

  • Wake up and eat breakfast at the proper time
  • Prepare & tidy the study station before your class starts
  • Review the schedule for today together

During Learning:

  • Check if devices are plugged in or charged for the class
  • Keep the home with little to no noise to reduce distractions
  • Check-in regularly between sessions

Afternoon & End of class:

  • Take care of lunch before break & avoid screen time in this period
  • Allow child to play to keep the mind refreshed
  • Follow up to teachers if needed

Evening:

  • Prepare class materials for tomorrow
  • Stick to a proper bedtime schedule

Space & Location

For most people, having a dedicated workspace can have a strong positive impact on learning, even if it is a small area.

Key things to remember are:

  • Keep materials organised and easily accessible
  • Minimise distractions during learning time where possible
  • Establish clear boundaries between “workspace” and “home space”

If you have more than one child learning at home at the same time, it is usually more effective to have them all work in a single space. However, students will need to use headphones so they can work in the same room, while attending different classes. Please double check that all your children have working devices with front-facing cameras, headphones, and microphones. Having the right technology makes a huge difference.

Time Management

Balancing professional responsibilities while also giving support to your child requires careful planning and realistic expectations.

We advise parents:

  • Review your child’s schedule each morning
  • Identify key moments in the day which require extra support (e.g., starting tasks, submitting work)
  • Encourage independent work where appropriate, especially for older students
  • Use simple tools such as planners or checklists to track progress

It is not necessary to supervise every lesson. Checking in at key points during the day can often be more effective and sustainable.

Technology & Tools

Technology plays a vital role in supporting online learning for students. In addition to having a device, front-facing camera, headphones, and microphone, our student should have access to multiple digital learning platforms:

  • Schoology
  • Savaas
  • Google Meet
  • IXL
  • Learning A-Z
  • Nearpod
  • Khan Academy
  • And more!

Good Technology Practice:

  • Ensure your child’s device is charged and functional before the school day begins
  • Maintain a stable internet connection where possible
  • Encourage responsible and focused use of technology during learning time
